Of particular interest is the central pillar of the ecosystem, which, according to Gartner, “The central pillar of the ecosystem is the technology stack of applications, middleware, infrastructure and deployment services.”
According to Gartner, “The infrastructure level used to be just one layer consisting of core blockchain platforms, such as Ethereum, Tezos, Corda and Hyperledger Fabric. Since then, the layer evolved into a set of three layers: Layer 1 (core blockchain platform), Layer 2 (a scalability-oriented layer on top of Layer 1), and, more recently, Layer 0 (an emerging interoperability substrate).”

Gartner also noted, “It is possible different approaches in this [interoperability] layer will be eventually subsumed into other parts of the technology stack. Some observers position the interoperability function above Layer 1 rather than below, while others see interoperability at Layer 2 or even at the middleware level. For example, Cosmos can be viewed as an “app chain enabler” at Layer 2 or above, or Canton and Axelar could be seen as L1s in their own right.”
